It's time to rethink the purpose of art, and not only

txt: Art's lost subject - Antony Gormley on www.guardian.co.uk
The carbon crisis calls for a re-examination of our faith in the technological basis of western progress. A change in belief is a cultural change; art and artists are implicated. As Paul Ehrlich and others have pointed out, human evolution has been driven by cultural rather than biological change; our brain size, synaptic activity, physical characteristics have not changed much in the last million or so years. What has changed is the material culture that we have made and which has in turn made us, from stone tool-making, farming, printing, the industrial revolution, the information revolution and now, maybe, the most critical and difficult revolution of all: a complete reversal of many of the values that we have held dear. We can no longer assume that more is better. Technology that was in some senses made to make life better has now become the problem. But art is not technology; it is useless but vital. It is through art that we communicate what it feels like to be alive. When you ask "what is the point of art?" you could reformulate the question to "what is the point of human beings?"

txt: Who's your city? by Richard Florida
How the Creative Economy is Making the Place Where You Live the Most Important Decision of Your Life. It’s a mantra of the age of globalization that where you live doesn’t matter: you can telecommute to your high-tech Silicon Valley job, a ski-slope in Idaho, a beach in Hawaii or a loft in Chicago; you can innovate from Shanghai or Bangalore. According to Richard Florida, this is wrong. Place is not only important, it’s more important than ever. Globalization is not flattening the world; on the contrary, the world is spiky. Place is becoming more relevant to the global economy and our individual lives. The choice of where to live, therefore, is not an arbitrary one. It is arguably the most important decision we make, as important as choosing a spouse or a career. In fact, place exerts powerful influence over the jobs and careers we have access to, the people meet and our “mating markets” and our ability to lead happy and fulfilled lives.
