txt: Walter Benjamin - The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction
“Fiat ars – pereat mundus”, says Fascism, and, as Marinetti admits, expects war to supply the artistic gratification of a sense perception that has been changed by technology. This is evidently the consummation of “l’art pour l’art.” Mankind, which in Homer’s time was an object of contemplation for the Olympian gods, now is one for itself. Its self-alienation has reached such a degree that it can experience its own destruction as an aesthetic pleasure of the first order. This is the situation of politics which Fascism is rendering aesthetic. Communism responds by politicizing art.

[txt] Letter From Venice Off-Season: Art between the Biennials - brooklynrail.org
However, this also happens to be a summer season when there is no biennial—at least, no biennial of contemporary art. The architectural biennial and the film fest—both under the aegis of the Biennale di Venezia—will make their quixotic appearances in September, when the weather has tempered a bit, including the lowering of heat, humidity, and chance of flash storms. With its aura of royalty and decadence, this is the place where art lovers love to be. In addition to the historical regalia, Venice—like most of Italy—is a great place for coffee.

      [txt] Room 116 - Banksy
The thing I hate most about advertising is that it attracts all the bright, creative and ambitious young people, leaving us mainly with the slow and self-obsessed to become our artists. Modern art is a disaster area. Never in the field of human history has so much been used by so many to say so little. BANKSY

txt: An Interview with Maurizio Cattelan - www.sculpture.org
Maurizio Cattelan: It feels strange to talk about sculptures. It’s not so much a question of means as of images. I never even use my hands to create my work, just my ear glued to the phone. More than anything else, I listen to the murmur of images, and that’s always louder than the echo in the phone. I’m more interested in images than in sculptures. Imagine: I never took a chisel in my hands, never even had a studio.

txt: All the fun of the art fair - From The TimesOnLine
There is not much difference between an art fair and a fun fair. Behind the gaily painted façades and the smiles of the stallholders they are both, fundamentally, all about money. [...] Frieze has become a phenomenon because it understands a basic principle. Art fairs have to be fun. They are not about dry academic assessment of the contemporary. They are about entertainment. They must not encourage prudence. They must promote competitive consumption. In a fairground atmosphere, financial caution is more likely to be cast to the wind.

txt: OPEN XI - 11 Esposizione Internazionale di Sculture ed Installazioni / OPEN XI, International Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations - from 27 August to 28 September 2008 at Venice Lido and on the Island of San Servolo.
[en]: The itinerary of the exhibition presents the works of forty-three artists from all over the world, creating a geographical thought; not only an ethnic and political concept, but above all an idea. A cue for talking about travels and crossings, strength and power.
