Come nacque tale modello imprenditoriale?

(EN) There was a time in the mid-60s of the twentieth century, when an Italian company had the chance to lead the global information revolution, ten years earlier the Silicon Valley boys: Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. A technological revolution that had its roots in a cultural and social revolution, in an industrial design thought beyond socialism and capitalism, which promoter, Adriano Olivetti, begun to experience since the 30s in Ivrea, near Turin. Olivetti became the biggest Italian company, with the most successful international business, able to cover one third of the world market in its sector. A multinational atypical with strong local roots, characterized by futuristic social policy, lifelong learning and international cultural activities, elements that were the secret of his commercial success and not the result of his philanthropic or patronage profits. What was this business model like? How was his management style, designed upon knowledge socialization and social responsibility, which promoted an alternative society model and led to the threshold of the largest industrial occasion that Italy has ever had?

Rispetto a oggi, allora tutto sembrava possibile.

book: Communication Power - Manuel Castells on amazon.com

We live in the midst of a revolution in communication technologies that affects the way in which people feel, think, and behave. The mass media (including web-based media), Manuel Castells argues, has become the space where political and business power strategies are played out; power now lies in the hands of those who understand or control communication. Over the last thirty years, Castells has emerged as one of the world's leading communications theorists. In this, his most far-reaching book for a decade, he explores the nature of power itself, in the new communications environment. His vision encompasses business, media, neuroscience, technology, and, above all, politics. His case histories include global media deregulation, the misinformation that surrounded the invasion of Iraq, environmental movements, the role of the internet in the Obama presidential campaign, and media control in Russia and China. In the new network society of instant messaging, social networking, and blogging--"mass self-communication"--politics is fundamentally media politics. This fact is behind a worldwide crisis of political legitimacy that challenges the meaning of democracy in much of the world. Deeply researched, far-reaching in scope, and incisively argued, this is a book for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics and character of the modern world.

Thirteen are the typical Venetian bridges that the marathon runners meet in the last miles of the route, before reaching the finish line of Riva Sette Martiri. These 13 bridges, normally, would represent a really insuperable obstacle for the disabled athletes competing in wheelchairs. However, in occasion of the marathon, bridges are equipped with wooden ramps that help not only the wheelchairs, but also the runners, the residents and the tourists to experience Venice in easier manner. The introduction of the wooden ramps goes back to the very first edition of the Venicemarathon, however, it's in 2005 that the marathon organising committee reaches an agreement with the Architectural Barriers Elimination Office of the City of Venice in order to exted the period of availability of the ramps from a few days to several weeks. Thanks to this project, for almost two months every year, before and after the marathon, Venice acquires an accessibility otherwise impossible.

Italo Calvino’s Six Memos for the Next Millennium contains five memos, or personal testaments. The sixth was never written on paper. Each memo on lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity acts as a guideline for life and creativity. Six Memos for the Next Millennium is a book one should all read to endure a more satisfying life of clarity and simplicity. Although Calvino’s book was primarily written in regards to literature, his book can also relate to the fields of art and design. As in writing, design and typography should be light, clear, and simple while still maintaining a visually appealing and comprehensive story. Essentially, a designer and typographer convey to their audience “a story” that must be visually read and understood. Typography, design and writing portray messages, personalities, and hidden meanings for their audience in different ways but also much in the same vein.

As cultures encompass not only the arts and humanities, but also lifestyles, different ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs, the protection and promotion of their rich diversity invites us to rise to new challenges at the local, national, regional and international levels. This will involve integrating the principles of dialogue and mutual knowledge in all policies, particularly education, science, culture and communication policies, in the hope of correcting flawed cultural representations, values and stereotypes.

One is to be more efficient, be less destructive, to connect different aspects of life which do affect each other in more conscience and deliberate and intelligent ways. But the other is also to generate fundamentally new insights, new activity, new forms of social relations. So you could look at the planet as an information, creation and transmission system, and the universe was hearing its information but we werent. But increasingly now we can, early days, baby steps days, but we can actually begin to hear the planet talking to us.

The Renaissance, Europe's period of cultural, political and scientific rebirth, began in Florence around 600 years ago. At Google we're interested in a (small “r”) renaissance of a different kind — a digital one. Since the launch of Google Books, we’ve been working with libraries and publishers around the globe to bring more of the world's books to more readers around the globe. Any school child should be able to access the works of Petrarch, Dante or Vico (or, if they're so inclined, Machiavelli). In the case of these more famous authors, this is already largely possible, but what about the work of Guglielmo il Giuggiola or Coluccio Salutati? We want all of the great literature and writings of Italy to be accessible to the general public.

Question: You argue the web isn’t living up to its initial promise. How has the internet transformed our lives for the worse? Jaron Lanier: The problem is not inherent in the Internet or the Web. Deterioration only began around the turn of the century with the rise of so-called "Web 2.0" designs. These designs valued the information content of the web over individuals. It became fashionable to aggregate the expressions of people into dehumanized data. There are so many things wrong with this that it takes a whole book to summarize them. Here’s just one problem: It screws the middle class. Only the aggregator (like Google, for instance) gets rich, while the actual producers of content get poor. This is why newspapers are dying. It might sound like it is only a problem for creative people, like musicians or writers, but eventually it will be a problem for everyone. When robots can repair roads someday, will people have jobs programming those robots, or will the human programmers be so aggregated that they essentially work for free, like today’s recording musicians? Web 2.0 is a formula to kill the middle class and undo centuries of social progress.

The Hubble space telescope has brought about a visual revolution, more significant than any recent work of art in transforming the way we see ourselves and the cosmos. And shouldn't we be starting to admit that it was more important than Apollo? The moon missions were based on Newtonian science and confirmed a Newtonian model of the universe (planets in orbit, trajectories, everything very mechanical). The Hubble has revealed to the eye a cosmos that is far more poetic, mysterious, and fluid.

About two-thirds (65%) say the internet has been a change for the better, while just 16% say it has been a change for the worse; 11% say it hasn’t made much difference while 8% are unsure. This largely mirrors the balance of opinion at the close of the 1990s – the decade that saw the widespread adoption of the web. Dr. Ethel Wethering, a professor at Cornell University, once talked about 4 building blocks that help in raising children. 1. Attitude of Approval: A child’s attitude has a lot to do with the attitude of the parent. Choose to have a spirit of approval, so your child sees “I like you, even when you are bucking me.” 2. Help: When you have an expectation of your child, figure out how to help make it happen. 3. Respect: Be patient with your child and take time to understand what the child can and can’t do. Respect their abilities. 4. Affection and Tenderness: This building block can cement your relationship with your child. Show your love for your children. Hug them, tell them you love him. That will help you jump over a lot of hurdles and heal a lot of hurts.
