[txt] Next year's Venice Biennale to break with tradition - Yahoo news Singapore (AFP Rome)
Next year's prestigious Venice Biennale art show will focus on the creative process, breaking with longstanding museum-style exhibitions, organisers said Friday. Titled "Constructing Worlds", the international show, to be held June 7 to November 22, 2009, will be "closer to the process of production and the venues of creation and training - the studio, the laboratory - than traditional museum-style exhibitions", said next year's curator Daniel Birnbaum.

[txt] Biennale Art 53rd International Art Exhibition - Making Worlds
On 31st October 2008, during the meeting of the representatives of the nations participating in the 53rd International Art Exhibition, the Director Daniel Birnbaum outlined the salient points of his exhibition and indicated its title: Making Worlds // Fare Mondi // Bantin Duniyan // 制造世界 // Weltenmachen // Construire des Mondes // Fazer Mundos… Birnbaum stressed that the exhibition will not be divided into sections but instead weave a few themes into an articulated whole, and he pointed out three aspects in particular: - the proximity to the processes of production, which “will result in an exhibition that remains closer to the sites of creation and education (the studio, the workshop) than the traditional museum show, which tends to highlight only the finished work itself. Some of the works - declared Birnbaum - will represent worlds in the making. A work of art is more than an object, more than a commodity. It represents a vision of the world, and if taken seriously it can be seen as a way of worldmaking”. -the relationship between some key artists and successive generations: “A number of historical reference points will anchor the exhibition. These artistic roots are still active, productive. They give energy to the branches of the tree of art, and perhaps also to that which emerges today, to the ‘sprouts’. I would like to explore strings of inspiration that involve several generations and to display the roots as well as the branches that grow into a future not yet defined”. - an exploration of drawing and painting, with respect to recent developments and the presence in the latest editions of the Biennale of many videos and installations: “the emphasis on the creative process and on things in the making will not exclude works in classical media”. The 53rd International Art Exhibition will take place in Venice from 7th June to 22nd November 2009.

[txt] Venice Biennale Review - www.archinect.com
The Venice Biennale has an overwhelming presentation of design that is not overly coherent. Forget trying to see it all. Take it in like an Italian workday; expresso, then one hour of exhibit, followed by another espresso and brioche, followed by the next hour, and so on. Or take a break over at the Stalker/ Osservatorio Nomade exhibit and have your I Ching foretold, like architects such as Peter Eisenmann, who I've heard ritually does this. I am taking with me from the Biennale a hazy memory of craft, digitization, urban solutions and a reading of good fortune for the year.

How do you create a Venice Biennial pavilion?

[via] harrietbadger.blogspot.com [txt] How do you create a Biennial pavilion? A view point from Austria - www.contemporaryartsreview.com
It is extremely strange to be on the Biennial premises while the air is still cold and wintery. Even if you have visited the Biennial a dozen times as an art critic, it is always in June or August. Letting an exhibition act upon you in an unheated pavilion when the temperature is only ten degrees proves to be a special experience no matter how wonderful the Venetian light is. However incidentally, you instantly become aware of this fascinating Venetian light not to mention the Austrian Pavilion erected in 1934 according to the plans of Josef Hoffmann, one of the most beautiful buildings designed by the architect and on the Biennial premises.

see also: Venice Biennale 2009 first entries txt: Artist Mark Lewis will represent Canada at the 2009 Venice Biennale of Visual Art
It is critical that Canadian contemporary artists travel and exhibit their works internationally, said Robert Sirman, Director of the Canada Council for the Arts, and there is no more prestigious international venue in the visual arts than the Venice Biennale. The Council is proud to play a major role in the Canadian representation in Venice. We are deeply proud and thrilled to be able to present Mark Lewis’ new project at the Venice Biennale, says Barbara Fischer. Often focusing on singular moments in the contemporary urban or rural environment, his quietly majestic works offer a cinematic experience of time while remarking on the ruptures of history. They combine, in a new way, pictorial traditions with the genres and techniques of film to analyze both, and thereby offer poignant perspectives on the displacements that characterize modern life.

The bell tower clock strikes seven in the evening. In the central hall of the Venice Museum darkness falls, shrouding the blackened remains of what was once the main square of our city. This is where our ancestors met to do what the inhabitants of every city do in their main squares: stroll, meet with friends, converse and maybe even enjoy an ice-cream while sitting at one of the many square’s Caffès, letting their thoughts dance to the notes of the small orchestras. Today it seems that the aim of the Museum is to reproduce that atmosphere of past times for visitors with the same effective suggestion as a washed-out photograph fixed on the tombstones of people who have been buried.
