Back where the web began: matter, antimatter

txt: CERN: How the web began

The first proposal for the World Wide Web (WWW) was made at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, and further refined by him and Robert Cailliau in 1990.

txt: Antimatter atoms produced and trapped at CERN

Antimatter – or the lack of it – remains one of the biggest mysteries of science. Matter and its counterpart are identical except for opposite charge, and they annihilate when they meet. At the Big Bang, matter and antimatter should have been produced in equal amounts. However, we know that our world is made up of matter: antimatter seems to have disappeared. To find out what has happened to it, scientists employ a range of methods to investigate whether a tiny difference in the properties of matter and antimatter could point towards an explanation.

txt: Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals - Exhibition | The National Gallery, London

Contrary to our expectations perhaps, eighteenth-century Venetian view painting was both rich and varied. It was also a form of painting almost entirely shaped by the tastes and aspirations of foreign visitors to the city. The eighteenth-century Venice of Canaletto and his rivals was, to almost every visitor, a place of wonder.

txt: Ben Eine - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eine is most notable for his alphabet lettering on shop shutters in London's Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Broadway Market areas. Some of these letters have been mapped for ease of finding.[3] He has also taken his lettering to the streets of Paris, Stockholm, Hastings and Newcastle upon Tyne. Prior to becoming involved in commercial graffiti, Eine was a very famous and highly credible writer in the underground London graffiti scene. [...] Eine first came to prominence in the "commercial" graffiti scene through his symbiotic partnership with London graffiti artist Banksy; through Eine, Banksy was able to access the underground scene and through Banksy Eine accessed the commercial world. Impressed by the work of Banksy Eine chose to focus on "commercial" graffiti.

Venice is a starting point, a call to go, a special destination in a world of ends. It can be so big, and so small. So open, but so closed (you know, thorns and roses..). I like the lagoon, when the vaporetto approaches to the islands, in the autumn mist. People come here from everywhere, speak all the languages, wear in completely different ways. And they go away. It's a place of the world, and of the soul.

When sport joins civilization (with a little help from the sponsors, why not) people can do smart things. Even if it's raining and there is the "acqua alta" (high tide)...

txt: Adopt a Bridge for Venice - www.venicemarathon.it

Thirteen are the typical Venetian bridges that the marathon runners meet in the last miles of the route, before reaching the finish line of Riva Sette Martiri. These 13 bridges, normally, would represent a really insuperable obstacle for the disabled athletes competing in wheelchairs. However, in occasion of the marathon, bridges are equipped with wooden ramps that help not only the wheelchairs, but also the runners, the residents and the tourists to experience Venice in easier manner. The introduction of the wooden ramps goes back to the very first edition of the Venicemarathon, however, it's in 2005 that the marathon organising committee reaches an agreement with the Architectural Barriers Elimination Office of the City of Venice in order to exted the period of availability of the ramps from a few days to several weeks. Thanks to this project, for almost two months every year, before and after the marathon, Venice acquires an accessibility otherwise impossible.

txt: 25th Venicemarathon - Oscar Pistorius: The next three days will be full of fun and sport

The last one to give his welcome was Oscar Pistorius: “This is the third year that I came at the Venicemarathon and to be here on the occasion of its 25th anniversary is a great pleasure for me. I am not a marathoner but a sports man and here you can find always many young people. I am the testimonial of “Venice Accessible – the barriers are overcome just by running” and I will run the Family Run on Saturday morning, there will be many wheelchair athletes….therefore these three days will be a time to do sports and have fun.

      txt: Artverona - Indipendents

txt: WordPress.com and Windows Live partnering together and providing an upgrade for 30 million Windows Live Spaces customers

As we looked at customers’ blogging needs and what different companies were providing, we were particularly interested in what WordPress.com is doing. They have a host of impressive capabilities – from a scalable platform and leading spam protection, to great personalization and customization. WordPress powers over 8.5% of the web, is used on over 26 million sites, and WordPress.com is seen by over 250 million people every month. Not only that, Automattic is a company filled with great people focused on improving blogging experiences. So rather than having Windows Live invest in a competing blogging service, we decided the best thing we could do for our customers was to give them a great blogging solution through WordPress.com.
