link: www.incrocidicivilta.org Join the Venice literary festival (May 19/22 2010), where writers from all over the world talk of their works, cultures and experiences with scholars, journalists and common readers. Héctor Abad, André Aciman, Hoda Barakat, Tishani Doshi, Marcello Fois, Antonio Franchini, Jennifer Johnston, Randal Keynes, Alberto Manguel, Anthony Phelps, Yu Qun, Alka Saraogi, Tiziano Scarpa, Vikram Seth, Masahiko Shimada, Mikhail Shishkin, Ko Un, Fariba Vafi, Zhu Wen, Zoë Wicomb, Jeanette Winterson, Hong Ying txt: Incroci di Civiltà - Authors
The Comune di Venezia is thus making its expertise in reception, hospitality and culture available for the third consecutive year, and Ca’ Foscari University is placing its academic excellence and the cosmopolitan breadth of its studies at the service of the public: an important, joint effort to promote an international event. Writing is the starting point for discussing the most urgent topics of contemporary life within the global perspective that typifies Venetian history, confirming the city’s role as a virtuous interchange for numerous trajectories and creative experiences, and meetings and exchanges between societies. This third festival is again confirmed as a place for the study and comparison of different cultures: 22 guest writers from 16 countries who, over four days, will contrast cultures, writing, physical and mental geographies, drawing up a fascinating and highly articulate map of the meetings of civilisations and of individual and collective experiences.

Jónsi of Sigur Rós has released his solo album, Go. It happens sometimes to find a musician, an album, a song and think: wonderful! And the video is magic, like Iceland. [it] Succede ogni tanto di trovare un musicista, un disco, una canzone e di pensare: stupendo! Era un pezzo che non mi capitava. E il video è magico, come l'Islanda. link: jonsi.com/go video: Jónsi - Go Do Official video to first single from Go. [vimeo http://vimeo.com/9289064]

Give a bòcolo to your love: it's St. Mark day. txt: April 25th - St. Mark day - comune.venezia.it
April 25th is the feast of St. Mark, the Venice patron saint. In ancient times on this day a famous procession took place in the Piazza; religious and civil authorities as well as a deputy of artists took part in it. Also nowadays St. Marcus Day is celebrated with a procession in the Basilica. There is a hugely widespread tradition among Venetian men on this day: the gift of a bocolo, that is a red rosebud to the women they love best.

Venice has long been famous for being the city that is partially under water. Sea level rise associated with global warming would have an enormous impact on that city and the surrounding region. You can use the map below to zoom in on Venice and surrounding cities to observe the potential impact of sea level rise.

Venice Biennale - 7th International Festival of Contemporary Dance: Capturing Emotions

txt: Venice Biennale: 7th International Festival of Contemporary Dance: Capturing Emotions 26th May > 12th June 2010
Capturing Emotions is the title the director, Ismael Ivo, has chosen for this Festival, because dance, he writes, “is a workshop of human emotions and shared visions”. The Festival, organised in collaboration with the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice and with the expected support of the Veneto Region, focuses above all on two geographic and cultural macro-areas: Quebec and Canada on the one side, and Australia and New Zealand on the other, placing consolidated names such as those of Marie Chouinard and the Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal alongside young names – from Europe – that include the young and dynamic companies of the Kidd Pivot and Chunky Move. Alongside the active presence of artists from or working in these areas, the spaces of the Arsenale in Venice (Teatro alle Tese, Teatro Piccolo Arsenale, Tese delle Vergini), of the Teatro Malibran and of the Sale Apollinee in the Fenice, of the Teatro Fondamenta Nuove and of the Teatro Toniolo in Mestre will host choreographers from Italy, the United States and Sweden with original works presented as world premieres for the Biennale. A new feature for the Festival will be the opening of a separate space dedicated to the most experimental experiences in the field of dance, revealing pieces that would otherwise be little visible. Marathon of the Unexpected will be a space concentrated in a single day (12 June, from 3 to 10 p.m.) and comprising very short performances –not more than 15 minutes– to be chosen and presented on the basis of a call for entries (deadline 10th April 2010)
